Typically I’m a pretty laid back guy, but today I have been royally pissed off by JustHost.com, a company that I have been using to host all of my websites for the last three years. What did they do? Well, unbeknownst to me, my hosting plan expired today and the first notice I got was an email from JustHost last night at 11:29pm stating “Thank you for hosting with justhost. We would like to let you know that your web hosting subscription has now expired and will be deleted in the next 48 hours.” – REALLY??? I’ve been using their hosting plan for three years and the first notice that I get about my account renewal coming up is that it has expired and they’re about to delete it? Wow, what kind of shitty customer service is that?
Of course, the rest of the email goes on to say that I can login and reactivate my account, therefore saving everything, as long as I pay them for the privilege. Now, at this point I was annoyed, but it just keeps getting worse. When I logged into my account to the renewal page I was faced with outrageous pricing. My main options were:
- Month-to-month – $9.99/month
- 12 Months – $8.99/month ($107.88 total)
- 24 Months – $7.99/month ($191.76 total)
- 36 Months – $6.99/month ($251.64 total)
I’m not sure if you’ve noticed the advertisement for JustHost on the right of this page and also my ringing endorsement on the “Tools I Use” page, but in both of those places the price it shows is $3.95/month for hosting. If you go to JustHost’s website today you’ll see that they are advertising hosting for only $3.75/month. The crazy part is that it shows the $3.75/month price being marked down from a $6.95/month “Special Promo” – which is lower than anything I was offered! I called and spoke with one of their representatives and was told that $6.99 was the lowest that they could go and that there was nothing he could do to help. I then went to their chat help and was given the same song and dance, with the representative telling me that “Just Host prices increased in 2011” and “Just Host, Inc was purchased by a larged [larger] web hosting company and all of the customer data was moved to higher performing servers”. As if this justified the almost 100% price increase over what a new customer would receive, just crazy!!!
Another issue I had previously with JustHost occurred earlier this year when they were moving my data to “higher performing servers” and they locked me out of my account, saying that my account was past due and was about to be deleted. Apparently the upgrade messed up something on their end and it caused them to think I was past due and they almost deleted ALL of my websites, data, etc…YIKES!!! I should have learned my lesson then, but I didn’t. What’s that old saying – Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me (of course, no one does this quote justice quite like George W).
It goes without saying that I have removed all advertising for JustHost from this website, so if you see any ads still lingering, please let me know. At this point, I am not sure where to go. I signed up for the three years at just over $250 (my last renewal was $70.80 for two years…so the price has increased dramatically) to make sure that I didn’t lose any data and lock in the lowest monthly rate (which is refundable when I cancel), but I need to find another host for my websites and get everything migrated over. Of course, it is a painful process that I’m not looking forward to. I need to do some research into other web hosts and see what’s out there, which I haven’t done much of in the last three years. I know that Pat Flynn over at SmartPassiveIncome.com (amazing guy, amazing story, amazing site) recommends BlueHost, so that’s definitely going on the short list.
What about you, readers – any ideas for me? Which host is your favorite and why? I’m not necessarily looking for the cheapest, but I don’t want to spend an arm and a leg and get crappy service either. Thanks!
