5 Things Worth Buying This Summer

Before I get to my tips, I want to thank AB for allowing me to invade his blog once a month and offer some useful money-saving tips along with some coupons from my website. Thanks AB, very cool of you! Now on to regularly scheduled programming…

The old saying “timing is everything” has never been more true when it comes to shopping for bargains. If you can make purchases, especially big purchases, at the right time of year you can save some substantial money. By using buying trends and seasonal buying activity you can quickly determine when to pull the trigger in order to save the most money. Here are five of the best examples for this summer.

1. Electronics (especially TV’s)

The Japanese fiscal year ended in March making it is a great time to score a deal on a closeout HDTV or Blu-ray player. The reasoning has to do with an influx of new models which makes retailers scramble to clear out old inventory to make room. Just because an HDTV model may not have all of the “newest” bells and whistles doesn’t mean it won’t do everything you need it to do. Savings of 40% to 50% off top brands like Samsung, Sharp, and Panasonic is not uncommon right now.

2. Thrift Store Stuff

Spring cleaning has come to a close for most which means a lot of good stuff has been donated to thrift stores and Goodwill. Other people’s junk can be your treasure for pennies on the dollar. Look for deals on home decor, furniture, books, and gently used toys.

3. Vacuum Cleaners

Staying on the spring cleaning theme, the early summer months are the best time to pick up a new vacuum cleaner. New vacuum cleaner models come out in June making right now the perfect time to buy as retailers try to sell off old inventory at bargain prices to make room for the new models.

4. Gym Memberships & Equipment

For most Americans, the New Year’s resolution of getting in better shape is a distant memory. Also, with all the outside activities happening during the summer months, gyms are really hurting right now to attract new members. Use this knowledge to your advantage to score a great deal on a gym membership. If your local gym is not having any new-member specials right now feel free to haggle a little bit. I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised with the results.

5. Computers & Laptops

If you’re cool with last year’s model, which is probably only slightly slower than this year’s model, you can find a great deal on a desktop or laptop computer right now. This buying trend follows the time of year that chip manufacturers release new technology, which is early summer. It then follows that computer manufacturers release newer models making the older models available for closeout and inventory reduction deals. Also, it is worth noting that back-to-school laptop deals start popping up in mid to late July.

Thanks for the tip! I was debating whether or not I should be in the new laptop market… now I know.

Thanks Michael – Just make sure you know what you want the laptop to do. For most people who keep the laptop plugged in 95% of the time and just use it to surf the internet and write the occasional document – they’ll be fine with last year’s model. For people with more specialized demands, they will probably want to do a little more comparison shopping of the new models. Good luck with your purchase!

I will need another computer soon, so I might have to put it higher in the budget to see if I can save some serious money on it. I saved a lot on my current laptop, but it is slowly dying. I wish they would make electronics last a little longer these days.

Good point, Grayson – I bought a Macbook Air last year after going through some pretty crappy PC’s. I know I paid more for the logo, but I’m confident that it will last me a long time and be worth it in the end! What kind of computer are you looking for?
